This technical reference provides outer diameter (OD), schedule wall thickness, and weight-per-meter values for carbon and alloy steel piping design and procurement desks.
Pipe Weight Calculation Formula
The theoretical nominal weight of carbon and alloy steel pipe is calculated using the standard formula derived from steel density (7,850 kg/m³ or 0.2833 lb/in³):
Metric Formula: W = 0.0246615 × (D – t) × t
Where: W = Weight (kg/m), D = Outside Diameter (mm), t = Wall Thickness (mm)
Standard Schedule Designations
ASME B36.10M schedules represent standardized rating designations corresponding to specific nominal wall thicknesses across nominal pipe sizes (NPS). Standard designations include:
- Standard Schedules: Schedule 10, Schedule 20, Schedule 30, Schedule 40, Schedule 60, Schedule 80, Schedule 100, Schedule 120, Schedule 140, Schedule 160.
- Traditional Weight Designations: Standard Weight (STD), Extra Strong (XS), Double Extra Strong (XXS). Note: STD matches Sch 40 up to 10″ NB, and XS matches Sch 80 up to 8″ NB.

Procurement & Dimensional Tolerances
Permissible variations in outside diameter, wall thickness, and length are governed by ASTM A530 / ASTM A999. For seamless carbon pipes (ASTM A106), the minimum wall thickness at any point must not be more than 12.5% under the nominal wall specified.
